The Union and Culxr House organize Get Out the Count community concert for Census
by Luis Jimenez
April 1st was Census Day. Households across the United States received invitations to complete the 2020 Census, which asks a few simple questions about you and everyone who is or will be living with you. Every person counted brings essential resources to their community, including congressional representation and federal funding for new schools, hospitals, food assistance plus housing and roads, and more.
The Union of Contemporary Art—a creative nonprofit focused on art, skill-building, and community—will manage a virtual community concert, as the census is underway. It’s a partnership with Culxr House, a creative safe space on North 24th Street, and Nebraska Counts, an excellent resource for census information.
Thus, Get Out the Count: Community Concert is set for Friday, April 24, from 6 to 8 pm. Culxr House “will play host for this virtual event, raising awareness for the importance of filling out the U.S. Census. We'll be partying on Zoom.com ID# 522-902-313) and enjoying performances from Corro, Daylonika the Artist (Daylonika Hudson), Jewel, and LakaiyatheLyricst (Lakaiya Johnson),” said their post promoting the Friday showcase.
North Omaha is historically undercounted in the census. $20,960 in federal funding is lost out on for every person not counted. Participation in the U.S. Census is an essential way to bring federal funding and other resources into the underserved community. The concert is a creative function to help meet the objective of getting everyone counted.
Participating Artists:
Corro – Rapper and hip-hop artist
Daylonika the Artist (Daylonika Hudson) – Poet, singer, songwriter, artist
Jewel – Spoken word poet
LakaiyatheLyricst (Lakaiya Johnson) – Vocalist and songwriter
Join the concert for free on Zoom at ID #522-902-313 (https://zoom.us/j/522902313), or watch it streamed live on The Union's facebook page on Friday, April 24, from 6 to 8 pm.

2020 U.S. Census
The census, which happens every 10 years in the United States, determines how many representatives each state gets in Congress, and how billions of dollars in federal funding gets spent. Schools, roads, and other important things in your community will gain–or lose—funding over the next 10 years depending on this official population tally. Local leaders stress that participation in the census will have a real impact here in North Omaha.
For the first time, you can choose to complete the census online, by phone, or by mail. Find out more about these methods online at 2020census.gov.
