Flatwater Free Press and NOISE Celebrate First Class of Omaha News Academy Graduates
By Matt Wynn, Flatwater Free Press
The first-ever class of the Omaha News Academy is graduating tonight, July 28, during an evening meet-and-greet with potential employers.
Exciting news: Many news organizations communications professionals are planning to attend. Do you want to join them and meet the academy grads? Email mwynn@flatwaterfreepress.org.
The Omaha News Academy, a partnership of Flatwater Free Press and NOISE, harnesses the decades of experience of a journalism professor, high school journalism teacher and longtime reporters and editors. This summer, the first academy class has learned an array of journalism lessons and debated journalism ethics.
The Goal
Arm academy grads with journalism skills, connect local news organizations and potential employers to different Omaha communities, and diversify our journalism workforce in Nebraska.
Our journalism teachers were Rod Howe, an award winning educator who led the journalism department at Westside High School for 23 years and later at Brownell-Talbot; Jon Nyatawa, a 14-year veteran reporter for the Omaha World-Herald; and Carol Zuegner, Chair of Creighton’s journalism and computer science department, who has taken CU students on reporting trips to the Dominican Republic, Uganda, rural Alaska and the border with Mexico at Nogales, Arizona.
Are you a potential employer? Does the Omaha News Academy sound fascinating to you? Stop by the meet-and-greet tonight between 6-8 p.m. at the Omaha Journalism Lab at 1911 Harney Street. Again, email Matt Wynn at mwynn@flatwaterfreepress.org to learn more.
Local journalism for the win!
